How to reach INRIA Rhône-Alpes

You may find more recent information on the INRIA Rhône-Alpes server. Please consult:

How to reach Grenoble (town center)

Grenoble, the Capital of the Alpes, is an important information technology center with 4 universities and engineering institutes, major research centers such as CEA, CNRS, INRIA and hundreds of information technology companies.

By train

If you are in Lyon or Paris ("Gare de Lyon"), you can take a high-speed train "TGV" to Grenoble railway station (travel time: 1 hour from Lyon, 3 hours from Paris).

By air

You can choose one of the following airports:

  • Lyon St Exupéry (LYS) is an international airport served by most major airline companies. From there, you can take a bus shuttle to Grenoble bus station (about 60 minutes) or a TGV train to Grenoble railway station. Note that the railway station and the bus station are very close to each other.

  • Grenoble-Saint-Geoirs is a national airport served by flights from Paris. From this airport, you can take a bus shuttle to Grenoble bus station (about 40 minutes).

  • Geneve-Cointrin is an international airport in Switzwerland. From there, you can take a train to Grenoble (about 2-3 hours). However, there are only a few trains a day.

By road from Lyon St Exupéry airport

From the airport, enter the highway (number A43) direction Grenoble-Chambery (do not take the direction Lyon).

  • The section of the highway between the airport and Grenoble is not free of charge. When entering the highway, you have to stop your car, push the green button with a white hand painted on it and get a ticket (which you should keep with care).

  • Later, the highway will split in two: Grenoble and Chambery. Choose direction Grenoble (not Chambery)

  • 10 km before Grenoble, you have to leave the "paying section" of the highway. Stop your car at the barrier, and have your credit card (or cash in French francs) and ticket ready for paying. The price is approximately 9 Euros). If you want a ticket for reimbursement, you must ask explicitly for it ("une facture").

  • After paying, you are still on the highway, but on the free of charge section. Continue in direction of Grenoble. As the highway splits in different points, choose direction "Grenoble Centre" if you want to go directly to INRIA, or "Grenoble Bastille" if you want to stop downtown (where most hotels are located).

  • If you choose "Grenoble Centre", this will drive you on the "rocade Sud", a free section of the highway that crosses the south part of Grenoble by doing a half-circle. When the half circle of the rocade finishes, you are on another highway (number A41) that goes from Grenoble to Chambery (see below the indications for reaching INRIA).

Please keep in mind that French regulations limit the speed on highways at 130 km/h max. (and 110 km/h if the weather is rainy).

How to reach INRIA from Grenoble

Montbonnot is a small village located 10 km north-east of Grenoble. INRIA is located in the ZIRST, which is often called the "French Silicon Valley".

By taxi

A taxi from the Grenoble downtown to INRIA will cost you approximately 20 Euros.
It takes approximately 10-15 minutes to reach INRIA depending on traffic.

By tramway/bus

  • Via the university:

From Grenoble center or Grenoble railway station, you can take tramway, line B, direction "Universités" (University Campus). It takes approximately 30 minutes to reach the campus depending on the traffic. Get off at the terminus station "Universités".

You must buy your travel ticket and validate this ticket *before* entering the tramway. You can buy tickets at different places: there are automatic selling machines at each tramway station.

Exiting from the tramway, walk 30 meters straight away in (in the continuation of the tramway line). You will find the 607 bus station. This shuttle operates every hour between the Campus and INRIA. It takes approximately 15-20 minutes depending on the traffic. Information about the 607 shuttle are available on the VFD website.

Get off at the bus stop named "INRIA", which is exactly in front of INRIA Rhône-Alpes a modern-style, white building with two artificial water pools in its front. Enter the building by the main entrance, in the middle.

  • Via the hospital

Be careful this solution is possible between 7.30 and 9.15 in the morning and between 16.15 and 18.15 in the afternoon only.

From Grenoble center or Grenoble railway station, you can take a tramway, line B, direction "Universités" (University Campus). It takes approximately 20 minutes to reach the station "Grand Sablon". At the same station you can take a shuttle direction INRIA. Such a shuttle starts every 10 minutes. You will find the timetable of this shuttle here.

On the following web site Tag, you will find various information about the tramways.

By car

There is a highway from Grenoble to Montbonnot (A41, direction East, to Chambery). Follow the highway a few kilometers and then leave (on the right) at the highway exit named "St-Ismier / Montbonnot / Domene".

Then, you arrive at a 1st roundabout (a local speciality). Turn around and exit on the left, direction Montbonnot (you should do a rotation of 270 degrees before going out of the roundabout).

Then, you are on a bridge above the A41 highway, and arrive at a 2nd roundabout where you have to turn left (270 degrees) still following the direction to Montbonnot.

Follow this road until you arrive at a 3rd roundabout. You should go straight (180 degrees) following the direction to "INRIA".

At this point, you are on "avenue de l'Europe". Go straight and pass the traffic light until you reach the 4th roundabout. Go ahead (180 degrees). At this point, you can see the INRIA building on your right.

Continue until the 5th (and final) roundabout. Turn right (90 degrees) following the indication "INRIA parking". Turn right again just after "Laboratoire Boiron". Park your car and enter the INRIA building by its main, central entrance.
